We thought it only fitting to open with one of the all-time barbershop classics, a standard that has stood the test of time.
Yes Sir has been recorded by hundreds of artists since it was written around 1925 by Kahn and Donaldson, and in an astonishing variety of styles. Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain; you name it, it’s been done.
One story has it that the writers were inspired by a little wind-up toy pig a friend’s daughter produced during a house visit, which sang the two alternating notes that define the opening of Yes Sir. Who knows?
lyrics
Well, who’s that coming down the street? Yes, Sir, that‘s my baby; No, Sir, I don’t mean maybe;
Who’s that looking so petite? Yes, Sir, that‘s my baby now .... sweet cookie!
Who’s that coming down to meet me here? Yes, ma‘am, we’ve decided; No, ma’am, we won’t hide it;
Yes, ma’am, you’re invited now ... yes, right now!
Who’s that - you know who I mean!
Sweetest ‘who’ you’ve ever seen; By the way, when we see the preacher, I’ll say - with feeling:
I could tell her miles away from here... Yes, Sir, that’s my baby now!
