Few Old Testament stories captured the imaginations of the African-American slave population more than that of the flight of the Hebrew slaves across the River Jordan from their Egyptian captors. Symbolising the line between life and death, with the promise of ablution and a welcome cool from the heat of oppression and the workfield, the deep and constant Jordan promised salvation for these modern-day prisoners, as heard in their songs.
Deep River – of unknown origin – is one of the best-known African-American ‘spirituals’, here arranged by one of the world’s foremost barbershop arrangers, David Wright.
